Duties of the Mayor:
The Mayor is the Chief Executive Officer of the City. He chairs City Council meetings and also serves as Police Commissioner and Liquor Commissioner.
He is responsible for the appointments of the City Administrator, City Clerk, City Attorney and Treasurer with council approval. He also appoints all members of city boards, commissions and advisory committees with the consent of the Council. He signs all contracts and ordinances on behalf of the city and is the figurehead of city government.
On a day to day basis, he is the official representative of the City at public functions, meets with citizens on a variety of issues affecting the community and is the chief policy driver for the City.
Timothy D. Gover
A lifelong resident of Mattoon, Tim was elected City Commissioner in May of 2009 and was appointed Acting Mayor by the City Council in May 2010 after the resignation of Mayor David W. Cline. In April 2011, he was elected to serve as Mayor for the remaining two years of the unexpired term and will serve until 2017.
In 1995, Tim retired as Professor of Finance from Eastern Illinois University after serving 32 years. He operated as a director at First Federal Savings and Loan in Mattoon for more than 37 years as well.
He is a director of the Coles County Council on Aging and served for 11 years as President during which time the LifeSpan Center was built. LifeSpan is a multi-million dollar 26,000 square foot facility serving people of all ages in Coles County.
Tim also served as Governor of Rotary District 6490 in 1995-96 and is active in several other organizations.
