October is Illinois Art and Humanities Month 


Expo at Cross County Mall:
 
It is time again for the Annual Mattoon Chamber of Commerce Expo this Thursday October 4th at the Cross County Mall.  From 10am-4pm will be the perfect time to get acquainted or re-acquainted with Mattoon Area Businesses and Non-Profit organizations.  The very popular Taste of the Expo is from 11am-1pm with 14 of Mattoon's finest catering and restaurants. 1-4pm will be a new feature: a Manufacturing and Industry Job Fair.  All the job fair participants will be located in a special section near the main entrance of the Cross County Mall.  For more information call the Mattoon Chamber of Commerce at 217-235-5561.


"Stop the Bullying!":
 


October 5th Eastern Illinois University is hosting the "Stop the Bullying" conference, from 8:30-4pm in the Martin Luther King Union in Charleston.  The theme of the conference is "Beyond Awareness: Strategies to Eliminate Bullying". The Bridging Voices in Our Community Bullying Project™ serves as a catalyst to help educate and equip the learning community in the area of bullying prevention.  Support and hope is offered for those served; continuously striving to save a life one day at a time. 2012 marks the 24th year of The Great Pumpkin patch inviting guests from near and far to celebrate the beauty of harvest. Preparations are made year-round for  "pumpkin season" of September 15 through October 31. The working, family farm is  busy with preparations for planting and harvesting corn and soybeans and commercial pumpkins.  The Great Pumpkin Patch, The Homestead Bakery and The Homestead Seeds invite you to experience autumn.The Great Pumpkin Patch is proud to invite guests to see over 300 varieties of pumpkins, squash and gourds from over 30 countries around the world; all grown here on the farm. EIU softball club plays in Mattoon:
 

Friday, October  5th - Sun, October  7, the Eastern Illinois University Club Softball will take the field at the Mattoon Roundhouse Complex located at 331North 6th St. 

EIU will be hosting its second annual Fall Frenzy and is going to have 12-16 teams in a double elimination competition. Good luck ladies! Contact President, Jessi Smith at jrsmith7@eiu.edu for more information. Admission is free and concessions will available for purchase. 

 


Mattoon Library Book Sale:
 

Make your preparations for curling up with a good book with a trip to the Mattoon Library Book Sale this weekend October 5-6th. The Sale is open Friday 3-7pm and Saturday 8:30-2pm with a special deal of $5 to 'fill your bag" starting at 12:10 on Saturday.  Regular prices are $1 for paperbacks, $2 for hardback and $.50 for children's books. Major credit cards are accepted. For more information call the Library at 217-234-2621 or email at info@mattoonlibrary.org.  The Book Sale is hosted by the Friends of the Library. The Mattoon Public Library is located at 1600 Charleston Ave, in Mattoon.
