 It is that time of year again when the Corvetts descend on Effingham Illinois, much to our delight. September 13-16th is the Annual Corvette Fun Fest, Effingham, hosted by Mid America Motorworks. The is one of the largest Corvette gatherings in the world, as more than 15,000 Corvettes and over 45,000 enthusiasts take part in Corvette Funfest. Poker face, ppppoker face:
 
 

Show your poker face at the Royal Flush 5k and 10k Poker run this weekend September 15th.  Cost to register is free but donations are encouraged to enjoy the entire event. Prizes awarded for the top five card poker hand from playing card collected on the course. 10K runners will receive one extra card at 10K turnaround. One additional card may be purchased for a small donation to St. Jude's. Select the best five cards to determine your poker hand. Post party featuring live band "Identity Crisis" with food immediately following the race at Bourbon Street Steakhouse. Your donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital includes: 5K or 10K Race registration, entry into best hand giveaway, Royal Flush finish medal, post race party with live band entertainment & food, custom T-shirt. Civil War Muster:
 

Watch history come alive this weekend September 15-16th from 10am-4pm at Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site in Lerna, with the 123rd Illinois Civil War Muster.  Just as countless other men and boys (and a few women) answered the call of duty during the Civil War, President Lincoln's extended family did as well.  Alfred Hall, a nephew of the president, joined Company I of the 123rd Illinois Infantry and mustered in on 6 Sept 1862 in Mattoon, IL for a period of 3 years.  Just 32 days later he, along with the fresh recruits from Coles County, was thrust into the fight at the Battle of Perryville in Kentucky.  Join a typical Civil War Muster, activities include: speeches, roll call and drills. Race the Cross:
 

It must officially be fall because it is time again for the Annual Knights of Columbus Fall Festival 5K , Race the Cross this weekend September 16th.  There will be a a 1 mile fun run, 5k race and walk, and 10k race. Race awards will be given to the top male and female and to the top three runners in each age group.  There is a post race parts on the festival grounds at the Knights of Columbus Hall , 20th and Champaign Ave.  Online registration at http://www.mattoonkofc.org. 
  


Volunteer:
 
 
Join in one last time this summer to keep the Nature Center's restored Illinois woodlands and prairies in tip-top shape, Saturday September 15th, 9am-12pm. Specific projects are to be announced.  Please dress appropriately and bring a bottle of water.  Registration is encouraged.  All ages and abilities are welcome. Sunday September 16th  will be the first annual CARE (County Animal Rescue and Education)  Genesis Run/Walk for the Animals at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

Sunday, September 16th, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon.On site registration and packet pick up from 7:45-8:45 with start time at 9:00 AM This will be the first-ever fundraising run/walk for C.A.R.E. (County Animal Rescue and Education) and Genesis Animal Rescue in Coles County, Illinois. There will be competition for those who want it, and a morning of fun and fitness for everyone.Proceeds will help fund the care of homeless animals and promote pet adoption in Coles County.
